Omar shakes his head as he recalls "the brothers," a group of Muslim students who delivered impassioned speeches, laced with Al Qaeda-inspired extremist ideology, during Friday prayer sermons at his Mississauga high school.

"Slowly they started getting to your head," remembers the 18-year-old about his days at Meadowvale Secondary School, where sermons were led by students who were later arrested for belonging to an alleged homegrown terror cell.

"I was falling into their trap," says the man, who asked that his real name not be used.

Luckily, he says, he didn't fall far. A religious leader, Sheik Sayyid Ahmed Amiruddin, saw Omar was asking questions about jihad and defending Muslim brothers overseas, and "red-flagged" the teen as someone becoming radicalized.

Amiruddin intervened, "detoxing" the teen by espousing a more spiritual interpretation of Islam and emphasizing the need to realize one's responsibility as a Muslim in Canada.

When news broke, three years ago today, that the so-called Toronto 18 terror cell had been broken up in raids that resulted in the arrest of 14 adults and four youth, Omar thought: "That could've been me. ... If I had kept hearing that stuff over and over, maybe I could've been there."

Following the arrests, the sheik devised a 12-step detox program that treats and counsels young Muslims who are sympathetic to extremist ideology.

In December 2008, Amiruddin presented his program to members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Muslim community, calling on the community to support the program financially and the authorities to endorse it.

"We are not looking to demonize youth in our community and say they're all terrorists," said Amiruddin of the Al Sunnah Foundation of Canada.

He believes extremism can be fought by offering an alternative view of Islam. "We are working to rehabilitate and ensure others don't go down the same path as those arrested. "

Since the arrests, one youth has been convicted and one adult has pleaded guilty, which further fuels concerns of homegrown terrorism, says Amiruddin, adding: "Canada needs to have a domestic counter radicalization strategy like those in Britain and the Netherlands."

The program involves promoting peace and tolerance and challenging a narrow-minded brand of the faith that prevents activities such as listening to music and celebrating the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Often, it is parents who bring their children to Amiruddin.

"You don't realize you're being detoxed," said Omar, adding it took about four months to understand that what he had learned during those Friday sermons was wrong.

"I just thought I was gaining knowledge. If he had come out and said he was detoxing me, I wouldn't go. (Amiruddin) knew how to speak with us."

The program has inspired similar projects by Mohammed Shaikh, director of the Masjid el Noor mosque in Toronto, and Robert Heft of Paradise Forever, a support group for Muslim converts in Toronto."You challenge them, you get in their face and say 'Why do you believe that?' " said Heft, in a recent interview. "You put doubt in their foundation and then you build them back up."

Masjid el Noor sponsored Amiruddin's detox program and tailored it to meet its own requirements, said Shaikh.

"We have to admit that there are some people among us ... who are up to no good," said Shaikh.

Sayyid Ahmed Amiruddin is an authorized Deputy of Shaykh Nazim al-Qubrusi, al-Hanafi, the Grand Mufti of Turkish Cyprus. Amiruddin founded the concept of a systematic deradicalization program called the 'ASFC 12 Step Detox' program in 2006 as a radicalization prevention program in Canada in response to the 2006 Toronto terror plot.

Details of the 2006 Toronto terrorism case revealed in court, as reported by the Canadian media, stated the plot was 'mimic' the September 11 attacks, as 'the Battle for Toronto', during which 'a three-day bombing assault aimed at shutting the downtown core, crippling the economy and killing civilians was planned'[4]. The Toronto Star reported, 'Members of the so-called Toronto 18 would pack three U-Haul vans with explosives and park them at three locations: the Toronto Stock Exchange; the Front St. offices of Canada's spy agency; and a military base off Highway 401 between Toronto and Ottawa'[4]. The plot was to commence September 11, 2006 and the destruction in Toronto was intended to make the 7 July 2005 London bombings look 'very small'[4].

Amiruddin's program was specifically tailored to undermine the ideological underpinnings of extremist ideology under the direct guidance of H.E. Shaykh Nazim al-Qubrusi, the worldwide leader of the Naqshbandi Haqqani Sufi Order and the Grand Mufti of Cyprus[1].

Amiruddin first presented his '12 Step Detox' for Islamic extremists before Canadian politicians at Canada 2020 with Al Gore in June 2006[2] in Mont Tremblanc and follow up meetings specifically regarding the program and its goals were held with community leaders. In December 2008 Amiruddin presented the program before the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and community leaders, calling upon authorities to endorse it and the community to support it.[1]

In Feb 2009 Amiruddin was interviewed by Fox News about the program[3], and in June 2009, the Toronto Star, Canada's largest newspaper, published a story about Amiruddin's program and the effect it has had on the lives of 'would be radicals', stating, 'Islamic ‘detox’ saved student from terror cell'.[1]

Canadian Mosque Sets Up 'Detox' Program for Would-Be Terrorists

Thursday, February 26, 2009
By Kathleen Foster

TORONTO —  A Canadian mosque is taking a page from the Alcoholics Anonymous guidebook and applying it to its fight against terrorism.

Leaders at the Masjid el Noor Mosque in Toronto say Muslims who get sucked in to an extremist interpretation of Islam become addicted to faith, just as an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol. So the mosque has set up a 12-step program to "detox" budding radicals before it's too late.

The "Specialized De-Radicalization Intervention Program" was created by the mosque's director, Mohammed Shaikh, who says the program is the first of its kind. Shaikh, who used to work as a police chaplain, says the 12 steps are geared toward young people who have fallen in with the "wrong crowd," often through connections made on the Internet.

"The Internet is one of the biggest problems. Online, they can seek out people who think like they do," Shaikh said.

Parents who suspect their teenagers or young adults are heading in the wrong direction bring them to Shaikh, a trusted member of the community. One of the counselors he has recruited for the program, Ahmed Amiruddin from the Ahlus Sunnah Foundation of Canada, says the goal is to show the radicalized youth that Al Qaeda's beliefs are theologically wrong.

"Their interpretation of the Islamic faith is inconsistent with the last 1,400 years of Islamic schools of thought," Amiruddin says, "We clarify the differences and bring people back toward the traditional interpretation of the Islamic faith, which completely rejects suicide bombings and extremism in all of its forms."

The 12 steps incorporate verses from the Koran that speak of peace, address worldwide conflicts and highlight the need of Muslims to find common ground — not "fighting ground" — with other faiths.

Toronto Police Superintendent Brody Smollet, who worked with Shaikh when he was a police chaplain, welcomes the program. "If Mr. Shaikh is successful," Smollet said, "if he can bring even a few of the youth out of that radicalization, it would be a real benefit to our society, in our community, in our country as a whole."

Mosque leaders would like to see their 12 steps used throughout Canada, which has 580,000 Muslims, about 2 percent of the population. They have reached out to the Canadian government, offering to help courts deal with terrorism cases, including well-publicized terror suspects like Omar Khadr, a Canadian who is accused of killing an American solider in Afghanistan and is being held at Guantanamo Bay.

They would also like to work to detox "The Toronto 18" — a group of 18 young men who were arrested in 2006 and accused of plotting to bomb Toronto landmarks and government buildings. One of the 18 was convicted last year, 10 are awaiting trial and seven have been released.

The Canadian goverment says it is "committed to reaching out to various communities to foster dialogue on national security matters, including extremism" but has not yet accepted the Masjid el Noor Mosque's offer.

Counterterrorism expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross, who wrote about his own return from Muslim extremism in his book "My Year Inside Radical Islam," says the 12 steps could be helpful for people found guilty in terror cases, but the program should not be used in lieu of punishment.

"Saudi Arabia and Yemen have had programs with a very high recidivism rate, Gartenstein-Ross said. "Part of the reason for that is that is all people have to do in order to complete the program is announce their own deradicalization. They have every incentive to declare themselves deradicalized and there is very little to lose in doing so."

Smollet says he doesn't think Toronto has a problem with Islamic radicalism, but he stresses that the detox program isn't only for deeply entrenched radicals. "The program is designed to look at people who are just, kind of on the fringes. They're not hard core, radical terrorist people. They are right at the stage of their life where they could go either way."

Amiruddin is currently using the 12 steps in the treatment of three young people at the mosque, one of them female. He says he thinks it will take six months or less to reform them. He says some see the light as soon as they go through Step 1: "Who is Allah?"

"Most people, once they realize, 'Hey, I even have God wrong here,' most people do want to change," Amiruddin said.

It was to be "the Battle of Toronto," a three-day bombing assault aimed at shutting the downtown core, crippling the economy and killing civilians.

Members of the so-called Toronto 18 would pack three U-Haul vans with explosives and park them at three locations: the Toronto Stock Exchange; the Front St. offices of Canada's spy agency; and a military base off Highway 401 between Toronto and Ottawa.

If they got their act together in time – if they procured the necessary ammonium nitrate fertilizer and nitric acid – maybe the bombings could begin on Sept. 11, 2006.

And if all went according to plan, they would wait three months and launch another attack on the Sears Building in Chicago or the United Nations building in New York City.

The destruction in Toronto would make London's 2005 subway bombings appear "very small." And, it would "screw" with the prime minister, government and military so much that they would pull Canada's troops from Afghanistan.

Those were some of the comments made by the alleged Number 2 guy of the bomb plot while speaking to undercover police agent Shaher Elsohemy in the months leading up to the mass arrests on June 2, 2006.

The remarks were contained in a "statement of uncontested facts" presented yesterday in a Brampton court on the first day of a sentencing hearing for Saad Khalid. The 22-year-old Mississauga man pleaded guilty to his role in the bomb plot, marking the first time a member of the group admitted to the existence of a bomb plot.

For the first time, more specific details of the plot surfaced – such as the "Battle of Toronto" moniker, trying to coincide an attack with the Sept. 11 anniversary, the targeting of an Ontario armed forces base and the name of the agent who orchestrated the purchase of three tonnes of ammonium nitrate.

Based on the evidence read aloud by Crown prosecutor Croft Michaelson, Khalid was neither the alleged mastermind of the plot nor the Number 2 guy. But he clearly played a role. Khalid arranged for the rental of warehouse space in Newmarket, where they had planned to store the fertilizer, and he was tasked with receiving the delivery truck when it arrived.

A video played in court showed Khalid and a co-accused unloading a truck and carrying bags labelled "ammonium nitrate" into the warehouse. To avoid suspicion, they wore T-shirts with the words "Student Farmers" on them.

Before the two finished unloading the truck, police officers with guns drawn swooped in to arrest them.

A series of similarly dramatic arrests played out across the GTA that day, garnering international headlines of a homegrown terror cell.

Khalid was charged with knowingly participating in a terrorist group, receiving training for the purpose of enhancing the ability of a terrorist group and doing anything with "intent to cause an explosion of an explosive substance that was likely to cause serious bodily harm or death."

He pleaded guilty to the last count. The other counts likely will be withdrawn, said Khalid's lawyer Russell Silverstein.

Superior Court Justice Bruce Durno ordered a publication ban on the identities of Khalid's co-accused.

Since the arrests of the 14 adults and four youths, charges against seven have been stayed. A youth was convicted in the fall of belonging to a terror group.

Yesterday, the courtroom was largely filled with reporters and relatives of the accused – many likely wondering what this plea means for their loved ones still behind bars and awaiting trial.

Central to the Crown's case are two alleged conspiracies: that some of the accused attended a terrorist training camp and some were involved in a bomb plot.

Court was told that Khalid attended a jihadist training camp in Washago, Ont., in December 2005.

By March 2006, the group's two alleged ringleaders – one from Scarborough and the other from Mississauga – had a falling-out. After the rift, the Mississauga leader is alleged to have developed the bomb plot. His Number 2 guy was the one who most often met with the agent.

The hearing continues tomorrow.

Meded Ya Sayyidi Mewlana wa Aaghisnee Ya Ajdadeena!

Earlier last week an announcement was e-mailed out regarding an esteemed and honorable man, heir of Mewlana Sheikh Nazim (dba), his son Haji Mehmet (dba).

While editing a typo occurred unfortunately, and it has been brought to my attention by few brothers. The e-mail should have read as such;

Assalamualaikum wa Rehmatullahi wa Barkatahu

BismillahHirRahmaanNirRaheem

Allahu Akbar!

Sultan-ul-Awlia Mawlana Sheikh Muhummed Nazim announces his eldest Son to be "one of his" chief Khalifa, Sheikh Sayyid Mehmet!

May Allah (swt) Bless Him and Sultan and make it easy for him, Ameen.

Allahu Akbar!

    ==Assalamu'alaikum wa Rehmatullahi wa Barkatahu==

    Respected Brothers and Sisters,

It is indeed about time that we, Traditional Sunni Muslims, also known as "Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah" stand up and take more aggressive role in uniting Muslims Worldwide. We can truly be effective in this cause if we the “Supreme Majority” among Muslims are well bonded ourselves first. It is incumbent upon us as well to know and understand our basic tenants and beliefs of the faith and the authentic foundations on which they are based on, as they have been preserved and passed down over 14 centuries. It is of utmost importance that this knowledge is continually preserved and passed down to coming generations so that along with us they also have the same opportunity to benefit fully to better their lives.

It is vital to have a clear understanding of our own heritage and traditions before we can try to understand others to build strong sustainable bridges which will foster peace, mutual respect and unconditional support. All this will also enable us to contribute towards global peace and stability ensuring prosperity for all mankind. Together we can all help educate ourselves by help bringing awareness to such matters.

Along with your family and friends come and lets help each other to represent Traditional Sunni Islam...

BELIEFS OF TRADITIONAL SUNNI MUSLIMS/Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah

Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah is the largest group of Muslims whose beliefs and teachings are truly in accordance with the Holy Quran and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam). The beliefs of this largest group are the same as the beliefs of the Purified Family, Faithful Companion’s and Pious Predecessors (i.e. Salaf-us-Saleheen) (r.a) of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam).

Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) said: "I have left two things behind me for you (the Ummah). You will never go astray as long as you follow these two things. One of these two things is Allah's Holy Book (the Holy Quran) and the other is the Sunnah of his Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam).” (Muwatta Imam Malik)

This leading to the authentic narration of Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) in which he said: “I am leaving you with what if you stick to, you will not go astray after me. One is greater than the other; The Book of Allah, a rope (guidance) extended from heavens to earth, and my I’tra (offspring, i.e. Fatima, Hassan, Husein, Zaynab r.a) Ahl Bayti. And they (both the Holy Book and Purified Family) will not be separated until they come to me at the Basin (Al-Kawther). So, see how you treat them (both) after me.” (Sunan Tirmithi, various similar and exact narrations by Sahih Muslim (#2048), Al-Hakem, At-Tabarani etc)

Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) said that after he passes away, his Ummah should remain firmly steadfast upon his Sunnah and upon the way of his righteous Muslim Caliphs (i.e Abubakr, Umar, Usman, Ali and Hassan r.a). He advised us to follow this path alone and to be aware of innovations, which contradict the Holy Quran and his Sunnah. (Abu Dawud; Tirmidhi)

STAYING STRONGLY ONTO THE RIGHT PATH

Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) advised us to remain firm with the largest group of Muslims and remain steadfast upon their way in beliefs and in actions. The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) said: "He who deviates from the largest group of Muslims, even as much as a hand span, has himself cut off his connection with Islam". (Abu Dawood)

PROTECTING MUSLIMS AND SAFE GUARDING ISLAMIC BELIEFS

The beliefs of the largest group of Muslims will be in accordance with the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), the beliefs of the Ahlul-bayth Al-Athar, Ashaab Al-Ajmaeen and Salaf-us-Saliheen (r.a).

Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) said: "In the period prior to the Day of Judgment, false and deceitful groups will emerge. They will say things to you, which neither you nor your forefathers will have ever heard before. Stay away from these deceitful people and do not let them come near you! Do not be misguided by them and do not let them cause strife amongst you!" (Sahih Muslim)

SAYINGS OF GREAT ORTHODOX SCHOLARS AND LEADERS OF ISLAM

Ghawth Al-Aadham, Sheikh Assayid AbdulQadir Al-Jilani Al-Hassani wa Al-Hussainy Al-Baghdadi (r.a) states: "There are 73 groups as foretold by Sayyiduna Rasoolallah (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) and (bear in mind that), the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah is the rightful group.” (Ghunyath-ut-Thaalibeen)

Sayyedina Imam Al-Ghazzali (r.a) writes: "The Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jammah is the successful Firqah (group) and it is this Firqah which weighs or determines its thoughts and it is according to the scales of the Holy Quran". (Mujarribaat-ul-Imam Al-Ghazali)

Sheikh Shah Wali'ullah Muhaddith Ad-Dehlawi (r.a) states: "As RasoolAllah (sallal laahu alaihi wa aalihi wasallam) has stated, follow this 'Sawad-al-Aazam', and when the four Madhabs are within the Sawad-al-Aazam then the following of any one of them, is following of the Sawad-al-Aazam. Therefore, refuting any one of them is refuting the Sawad-al-Aazam". (Aqd-ul-Jayyad)

Imam Sufyan As-Souri (r.a) states: "By Sawad-Al-Aazam is meant those who are called the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah". (Al-Mizaan-ul-Kubra)

Shah Abdul Aziz Muhaddith Ad-Dehlawi (r.a) states in his book "Fatawa Azeezi" (Vol. 2, pg. 4): "The various parts of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah in Aqaa'id such as the Ash'ariya, the Maaturadiya, in Fiqh the Hanafi, the Shafi'i, the Hanbali, the Maliki and in Tassawwaf such as the Qadiriyya, Rafaiyyah, Shadhiliya, Naqshabandiya, Suhurwardiya, this servant considers all of them to be the truth".

Imam Al-Rabbani Mujaddid Alif Ath-Thaani (r.a) states in the second chapter, page 67 of his "Maktubaat Ash-Shareef": "The way of salvation is following of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah. May Almighty Allah Ta’ala bestow blessings upon the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah, in their speech, in their actions, laws, for this is the successful group. Besides this, all other groups have become victims of deception. Today, no one realizes how much these misled groups will be punished; however, on the Day of Qiyamah this secret will become apparent. Even though, at that time this knowledge will be of no benefit to the misled".

P.S. - Above is the unanimous position of the Four Sunni Islamic Schools of Jurisprudence (i.e. Hanafi, Hanbali, Maliki, Shafii) of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah.
